Cockatzu

Average: 3 (1 vote)

This hybrid breed is the result of crossing a Shih-Tzu with a Cocker Spaniel. The breed is new and relatively unknown, so no standards have been set, but to best determine the Cockatzu's characteristics it is best to research the parent breeds.

I have a Cockatzu and he is amazing. He will be 3yrs old in February of 2012. He is such a handsome boy that everywhere we go people are always stopping us to ask what kind of dog he is. This is not an exaggeration! His coat is soft and wavy and some shedding but not nearly as bad as a purebred cockerspaniel, so I would say his coat is not quite as "non-shedding" as a shih-tzu might be but somewhere right in the middle. Not only is the adorable, but he is honestly a great dog. He is obedient, and incredibly intelligent. He understands the diffence between words like "bone", "ball", "hungry", and "cookie" etc. So if you tell him to go get the ball, he will bring you the ball - not the bone. If you ask him if he's hungry, he will run to the kitchen and sit in front of his bowl - IF he's hungry. If I tell him to "go w/Daddy" he will follow my husband or go find him, and the same is true if my husband tells him to "go to Mommy". He is extremely loveable (will want belly rubs every night and at least a couple minutes of cuddling in the morning before you get up). He is playful but not hyper at all. He is a good watch dog and barks if someone rings the bell or knocks on the door - or lets us know if there are any unusual sounds in/around the house. He is excellent in temperament.
