The breed was brought to the British Isles by Caesar during 55 BC where now, the English Shepherd is said to be one of the purest breeds of Roman sheep and cattle dog; today they are still prized for their herding and guarding abilities. The primarily stock dog weighs 40 to 60 pounds and stands 18 to 23 inches tall. The English Shepherd is generally friendly but is the best suited companion for his or her master.
