Greyhound

Average: 4 (9 votes)

This breed is one of the oldest known to man, dating back to 2900 B.C. where they were discovered in the tomb carving of ancient Egyptians, and bred only for royalty. Also known as the fastest breed of dog, this lean and muscular dog stands at 27 to 30 inches and weighs 60 to 70 pounds. Although a loving companion, Greyhounds are very independent.

These have got to be the ugliest dogs ever!

Greyhounds are beautiful outside and inside. To see them run has been called poetry in motion. Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I find it rude to denounce any breed of dog!

These dogs are the most magnificent creatures I have ever had the joy of knowing. Not only are they absolutely beautiful on the outside, but they have hearts of gold & eyes that are liquid pools and melt my heart each and every time I look into them. Not only do I feel that this is truly one of the most beautiful breeds, there is not a dog out there that can be considered ugly to its owner.

You're entitled to your opinion Ashley but as you can tell, we whole heartedly disagree with you. Until you've been owned by one you have no clue what you're talking about!

I have owned 2 track rescues. I whole heartedly agree that these animals have an independent side of their selves. But since most are adopted from the race track, you have to understand the life they lead to that point was nothing more than a couple times out of the crates each day to exercise, to relieve themselves, and to eat. Then it was all about the race. I agree with the comment they are poetry in motion. These animals go from 0 to 45 mph in about two strides. Watch this in slow motion and you'll be amazed. Conversely, after they get used to your home (they have to be introduced to tile and wood floors, stairs, etc.) and know that they are safe; you become the center of their world. With few exceptions, these dogs are loyal and extremely loving creatures. They want to become lap dogs at times and will keep you smiling and surprise you with their funny antics. Once in your home they take retirement seriously. They are called "45 mph speed bumps" because they enjoy sleeping about 18 hours a day on their backs, feet in the air. This is called "Cockroaching" and is a favorite activity. Although they get along well with other breeds (however, not the smaller breeds or cats usually), you should adopt two because they really enjoy hanging with another grey. They don't do all that well as the only animal in the house if the people in your home are not there much. They love your company.
The down sides to this breed are that you can't let them out of the house without a leash or let them loose in an open area. They are sight hounds and once they see something of interest, they're gone. Can you run down a 45 mph vehicle? Many have been lost and/or died because this happens. The breed also has a huge problem with several cancers. Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) is the most prevalent. It's an aggressive cancer and once diagnosed will cut their lives short. Amputation and Chemotherapy can help. But even with this regimen, their lifespan once diagnosed with OS is normally not more than 1 to 1.5 years because the cancer normally will metastasize and raise its ugly head in another part of their body. If amputation and chemo is not an option, this beautiful creature will only last for a few months -devastating to say the least. I still mourn the loss of both of mine to this disease.
However, after owning the breed, you'll be captivated by their personalities and yes their eyes "are" the pools of their souls.
Save at least one today!!!!
