The breed is a descendant of a larger hunting breed that originated in France that developed into great pack-hunting dogs that where were used to hunt small game, thus earning the title petit. The large hunting Petit Bleu de Gascogne stand at 20 to 23 inches and weigh 40 to 48 pounds. The breed does best in packs but when not, a leash is a definite must.
